The First Significant Winter Storm is in the Forecast; Are You Prepared?
Winter is officially upon us, and it would seem that the weather forecasts are eager to oblige. The National Weather Service and area meteorologists are all keeping an eye on the potential of a severe winter weather on the Christmas holiday and immediately following. Current forecasts are still unclear of the precise track of these systems; however everyone agrees that much of the state will be impacted. With that in mind, the National Weather Service has established a Winter Weather Awareness Campaign, and has provided a number of links to winter weather information:
- The Varying Types of Winter Weather
- Winter Weather Situational Awareness
- Winter Weather Products
- The Hazards of Light Wintry Precipitation
- Winter Weather Safety Information
- Kentucky Winter Weather Climatology
- How to Properly Measure & Report Snowfall
- What is the Wind Chill Index?
- Cool Season Severe Weather
Additionally, Harrison County Emergency Management and the Kentucky Division of Emergency Management would like to provide the following links to tips and informative sources for your safety and preparedness:
- Winter Weather Safety Tips
- Winter Weather Car Kit & What To Do if You Become Stranded in a Car
- Severe Weather Safety Tips – Winter Weather
- Travel & Weather Information
- Kentucky Weather Preparedness Committee
- Android App: Winter Survival Kit – by NDSU Extension Service*
- iOS App: Winter Survival Kit – by Myraid Devices, LLC*
With the first wave of significant winter weather being forecast to enter over the holiday, we wish that anyone planning to travel take the time to prepare for the event.
