extremely high winds…

The winds from what had been Ike are really whipping in the area. There are (unsurprisingly) reports of trees and lines down throughout the county. A few minutes ago, it was reported that a window was blown out of the side of the City Hall building (a city fire unit is responding to investigate).
Most of the Cynthiana Fire Department has been dispatched to various parts of the city to respond to limbs being down, and other reports of sparking or arching power lines. One of the last more interesting reports was of a downed tree on Broadway, which had tangled into some lines, fallen, and landed on top of a parked car.
Needless to say, caution is advised for anyone who is outdoors and in or around any vessel, vehicle, or structure which may be affected by these strong gusts of winds…
…as of this moment, the NWS hasn’t published any reports of damage in Cynthiana.

Company is coming…

I actually managed to wake up at a decent time this morning, though I was still slow moving and reluctant to get out of bed. I’ve had troubles with getting to bed at a decent time for months now, which has understandably led to me having a late start of the morning. I’m hoping that as fall sets in I’ll be able to work passed this…
Since I actually managed to roll my sorry and tired buttocks out of bed at a decent hour I found myself able to listen to this morning’s installment of Coffeebreak. This morning’s guest was Billy Grayson of the Battle Grove Cemetery. KENTUCKY RECEIVES HURRICANE GUSTAV EVACUEES
FRANKFORT, KY: August 31, 2008 - Last night, through a joint-coordinated
effort by local, state and federal officials along with the Louisville Red
Cross, the Louisville International Airport began receiving evacuees from
Louisiana. The first plane touched down at 9:20 pm EDT and three others
followed throughout the night. Keith Alvey, director of the Louisville's
American Red Cross chapter, reports there are over 1,000 evacuees now being
housed at the State Fairgrounds. As they arrived, they were taken to the Red
Cross Reception Center located at the State Fairgrounds South Wing and
registered before settling in.
During registration passengers are asked if they have any unmet or special
needs, given a personal comfort package and made comfortable for the evening.
Mr. Alvey commented, "Overall things went very well, in the many number of
years I have been involved in these types of operations, this is by far the
best I've been a part of. We are very pleased with the joint efforts to
assure that the passengers were greeted, made welcome and given the
opportunity to rest and relax as soon as possible."   General John W.
Heltzel, director of Kentucky Division of Emergency Management, added;
"Kentucky is always one of the first that our neighboring states turn to for
assistance. They know we can get the job done." He continued, "This is only
possible through collaboration, coordination and communications. It starts
from our vast group of dedicated volunteers and continues all the way through
the Governor's Office."
Kentucky is prepared to accept additional flights into Louisville as more
evacuees are expected to arrive throughout the afternoon and evening.
Shelters have been opened and are prepared to receive additional evacuees in
Lexington, Bowling Green and Owensboro. Emergency management officials in
Frankfort have coordinated preparations to receive over 4,000 possible
evacuees.

Does Diana's high school class care?

Diana’s ten year class reunion is approaching…
…and she seems to be one of very few classmates that care.
This afternoon Diana and I ran into one of her fellow organizers of the event at the bank. There, Diana received some sad news.
The group had been expecting an amount of nearly $2500 to be received from those attending the reunion. This amount would have covered the planned expenses of renting the room and catering.
So far, only $540 has been collected.

The Idiocy of the Local Media

It amazes me at how certain things get published in the local newspaper. One recent article which ran in relation to the excitement of Jeffrey Pratt told the story of a bank teller who had the misfortune of experiencing one of his robberies.
Christine Philpot had been employed by Farmers National Bank for twenty-eight years; two at the main branch in Cynthiana, and the remaining at the Berry location. During her employment in Berry she experienced four robberies. She has been stared down by the barrel of a gun and locked in a vault. This past May, seven months following Pratt’s robbery of the Berry branch, she finally decided to retire from her job at the bank.

water break

There has apparently been a major break somewhere in the water system, and the source has yet to be found. As of this moment all available emergency response units are reporting to the water plant for coordination in assisting public works in locating the source.
Sadly, I don’t know when the drop in pressure was discovered, as i turned on the scanner a few minutes ago.
UPDATE 8:56pm: the break appears to be at the old RECC grounds (Now the location of Cynthiana Tire). an officer just reported noticing that one of the structures is flooded. Continue reading “water break”
