The Breakway Republic of Vermont?

A small cadre of writers and academics in Vermont is plotting political strategy and planting the seeds of separatism. They’ve published a “Green Mountain Manifesto” and they hope to eventually persuade the state Legislature to declare independence.

Two weeks ago, my computer crashed. I did something stupid – I imported the registry from another machine. Boneheaded thing to do. I was intending to analyze it, was half asleep, double clicked the file, and told it ok – immediately afterward I snapped awake and realized what i had done. I royally screwed things up.
Anyway, I had to restore the computer to it’s “fresh off the line” state – i never made backups (another boneheaded move). I’ve been fighting with it ever since. She’s almost back to normal though – and perhaps a bit better. I still had my old PC in storage, so I brought it back to life and copied things over. I’m not missing a whole lot – just two months of chats, and any other “personal” information that GDS leaves local – most of my other info hadn’t changed, or was available in a cached form on Google’s servers.
This accident has also afforded me the time to go back through my files again, and reorganize my directory structure. I’m a nut for archiving and organization of media. I really think I should give up on my IT dreams as a career, leave them as a hobby, and work as a librarian.
Anyway, I installed a few extras, one being a feed reader (if you haven’t gathered that – I’ve been taking advantage of the publishing capabilities for my LJ, so that I can repost interesting stories). I prefer to get my news online anyway. The ability of getting “personalized” news is better than the one size fits all that print and television has to offer. (Not to mention that we just cut the cable out, and we’re too cheap to get a subscription to the paper.)
Well, I’m starting to grow tired of writing, so I believe that I’ll stop here, and go on to sipping my coffee, and reading the news.

Economic Analysis of Toilet Seat Position

Economic Analysis of Toilet Seat Position
Ant writes “The Science Creative Quarterly has published an economic analysis of The Social Norm of Leaving the Toilet Down, employing game theory. This analysis is more thorough than preceding ones cited (from 2002 and 2005), as it factors in the cost of yelling. Both men and women can take some comfort in the conclusion though neither may in the end be satisfied.

Boys with Longer Ring Fingers are Better at Math

Boys with Longer Ring Fingers are Better at Math
slashthedot writes “While it is well known that boys have longer ring fingers as compared to index fingers, now some researchers say that the longer the ring finger ratio to index finger, the better boys are at math. In girls, the shorter the ring finger to index finger ratio, the better is their verbal skills. ‘The link, according to the researchers, is that testosterone levels in the womb influence both finger length and brain development.'”

Monster Pig

If you haven’t seen this thing on the internets, then you haven’t been on the internets.  It’s Monster Pig, and it’s more porky than a house transportation bill.  But is it real…or fake?

Tonight…a Countdown investigation with the only man America can trust during this mutant hog scandal, America’s Zookeeper, Jungle Jack Hannah.  It’s gonna be good.

Apple Hides Account Info in DRM-Free Music

interesting story…

Apple Hides Account Info in DRM-Free Music

Alvis Dark writes “Apple launched iTunes Plus earlier today, the fruit of its agreement with EMI to sell DRM-free music. What they didn’t say is that all DRM-free tracks have the user’s full name and account e-mail embedded in them. Is this to discourage people from throwing the tracks up on their favorite P2P platform? ‘It would be trivial for iTunes to report back to Apple, indicating that “Joe User” has M4As on this hard drive belonging to “Jane Userette,” or even “two other users.” This is not to say that Apple is going to get into the copyright enforcement business. What Apple and indeed the record labels want to watch closely is, will one user buy music for his five close friends?'”
