A site you likely won’t see…

For a while now, Diana & I have been visiting Cynthiana Baptist Church, and the experience has been quite good; the people are nice, the sermons are informative and entertaining, and the experience in the Sunday school class we were invited to–the only word I can think of to describe it is “fun.”

Anyway, this past Sunday, Diana had pointed out that the weekly service bulletin/pamphlet listed a URL on the bottom of the front page. I informed her that the domain listed–http://cynthianabaptistchurch.org–wasn’t really valid anymore; someone at the church had let the domain expire, and now it is being squatted upon. After explaining what squatting was, and telling her that the company that now possessed the name would likely want to charge the church a few hundred bucks to buy it back, I told Diana that it’d be in their best interest to just start-over from scratch and buy a new name, too. To this, Diana replied, “…well, maybe you should do something…”

Monday morning I sat down, with those words still echoing in my mind, and began to create a new site; a few days later, I had come up with a working concept, which is now running on my “home-server.”

pmv_bor

The site is currently configured as a WPMU setup, with one main site/blog for the church itself, and a blog for the pastor, student ministry and kids ministry. Most of the information that I have posted on the main site came out of caches at The Internet Archive; some of the information supplied is original–but not much. Many of the larger images were either created or re-created by me (a couple of banner images were split apart–I stitched them together; I also created a new banner for the main site as well as a collage using images found scattered on the church’s multiple Facebook pages).

If you’d like to see the site I created, head on over to and take a peek; but do it soon–I don’t know how long I’ll keep it up.

I don’t know whether I’ll share what I made with the church–I’m kind of scared of stepping on someone’s toes; and, is it really someone’s place to try and jump in and do something when they aren’t even a member?

Severe Weather Preparedness

Severe Weather Awareness Month copySevere weather remains the biggest, and most common, threat Kentuckians face on a daily basis. If we need a reminder, we only have to look back to the severe storms and tornadoes that ravaged the Commonwealth last February 29 and March 2, 2012, leaving 25 dead, hundreds homeless and thousands of homes damaged. With that, Governor Steve Beshear has signed a proclamation (59KB) declaring March 2013 as Severe Weather Awareness Month, urging all Kentuckians to be aware, and be prepared, for severe weather.

Kentuckians face many weather related challenges throughout the year, from tornadoes, flooding, straight line winds, lightning and winter storms. Every household should be prepared to face these challenges at any given time.

As a part of Severe Weather Awareness Month on Tuesday, March 5 at approximately 10:07 a.m. EST, the National Weather Service (NWS), partnering with KYEM and Kentucky Broadcasters Association (KBA), will conduct a tornado test message which will activate NOAA Weather Radios and broadcast media. Schools, businesses, government agencies and citizens across the Commonwealth are encouraged to participate in the annual Statewide Tornado Safety Drill. A survey will be available online, allowing KYEM and other officials to measure and improve preparedness for such occasions.

Click here for the survey, Governor’s proclamation, items for an emergency kit and plan, additional weather information and other important links.

The Kentucky Division of Emergency Management (KYEM) would like to introduce the2013 Severe Weather Preparedness Calendar.

Each month the calendar will help you learn important things to do during severe weather. Things that will help keep you and your loved ones safe. You can also become an honorary member of the KYEM Severe Weather Program. It’s really simple and KYEM will even send you a nice membership certificate that you can frame and hang at home!

IS-5.a An Introduction to Hazardous Materials

IS-5a_cert1Yay! Another certificate!

…what I learned was:

Course Overview

This Independent Study course is intended to provide a general introduction to hazardous materials that can serve as a foundation for more specific studies in the future. The course has five Units which are outlined below. No prior knowledge of the subject is required or assumed. At the end of the course, the participant should be able to:

• Explain the roles of Federal, State, Tribal and local governments in reducing hazardous materials risks through Health and Environmental Regulations;
• Discuss the two major hazardous materials identification systems used within the United States;
• Identify possible terrorist’s targets of opportunities in the use of toxic industrial chemicals (TIC) as Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD);
• Identify locations where hazardous materials are commonly found and how to determine their potential health effects;
• Describe basic terms that pertain to exposures to hazardous materials;
• Read and interpret a materials safety data sheet (MSDS);
• Explain how hazardous materials enter the body and contaminate the environment;
• Describe what communities can do to increase their emergency preparedness to respond to hazardous materials incidents; and
• Identify steps individuals and communities can take to protect themselves during a hazardous materials release.

The five Units are:

Unit 1: Health and Environmental Regulations. This Unit explains the roles of Federal, State, Tribal and local governments in reducing hazardous materials risks, and reviews the key provisions of critical Federal legislation.

Unit 2: Hazardous Materials Identification Systems. This Unit discusses the two major hazardous materials identification systems currently being used in the United States. It also outlines how communities should be able to recognize a terrorist use of toxic industrial chemicals as Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD).

Unit 3: Identifying Hazardous Materials. This Unit provides an overview of locations in which these materials are commonly found and discusses ways of determining what particular chemicals, with what health effects, exist in these locations.

Unit 4: Hazardous Materials and Human Health. This Unit introduces many of the basic terms used to discuss hazardous materials problems, and explain how hazardous materials enter and move through the body and the environment.

Unit 5: Preparing for Hazardous Materials Incidents. This Unit explains what local communities can do to increase their emergency preparedness to respond to hazardous materials incidents of any size. It also identifies steps individuals can take to protect themselves during a hazardous materials release.
