Blogging…

I am working on another writing assignment for ENG101 – this time it’s on blogging. The purpose of the paper is to give a novice reader an introduction to blogging, and how to go about setting forth in writing a blog.

Here is a rough form of the paper, which is due tonight. Feel free to offer suggestions and criticisms.

Everyone is getting connected these days. What used to be available to a few is now being brought to the masses; the digital divide is shrinking. As these new users to the Internet hop onto the web, they start discovering the world around them, and start discovering the electronic world that they never knew existed. In these trips into the unknown, they may discover a variety of social and networking websites, where they will sign up, and meet friends and even make a few new acquaintances. Many, flock to social networking sites such as MySpace. It is here that many of these new users discover a word that they have never seen or heard before – blog.

A recent newcomer to MySpace had found this portion of their Internet profile, and wondered what a blog was, and had even questioned this when they posted their first entry, unwittingly answering their own question. A blog is simply a place where a person can write, and share a multitude of ideas so that world may see and even comment on what one has to say. A blog is nothing more than an Internet journal.

While there may be several electronics papers and publications on the term, there is no set defining point, no clear history of where blogging began. The best source found on the topic, or at least the most read and most inclusive, Wikipedia, doesn’t even have a clue as to a particular point at which blogging came about and developed into what it has become today. While most of the history is speculative, it has been widely agreed upon that blogging stems from someone making use of the old Usenet and Bulletin Board Systems of yore, and posting a writing.

The term blog comes from the word weblog, a word coined by a gentleman named Jorn Barger. Barger created the word to describe how he “logged onto the web” and journalized his trips, findings, and studies. Two years following the creation of weblog, Peter Merholz broke the word into two words on his web site, creating the phrase “we blog.” Soon after, the term blog was taken into its own.

Up until this point, for anyone to blog, they had to buy and serve up their own sites. This was soon changed with the creation of blog hosts such as Xanga, Open Diary, LiveJournal and Blogger. Nowadays, one can find a blog just about anywhere, and find the resources to blog just as easily. In order to blog all one needs is a computer, access to the Internet, and a place to post. The process can be quite easy and painless, or can take on hours of research and coding; depending upon the type of blog one would want to create. Here, I will show how to get started in the world of blogging with no cost, and very little effort.

Choose a Host

First, one must choose a place to blog. For ease of use I would suggest that a newcomer try a simple web-based service (meaning there is no software to download, and all posts are written directly through an Internet browser); such as Yahoo!’s 360°, MSN’s Live Spaces, or MySpace. These sites are social networking sites as well, and chances are great that a few friends or family may already be using these services; plus these sites have easy invitation options if one desires to bring someone else new into this world. Another advantage to starting with either Yahoo! or MSN is that chances are likely that the new user has an email account with one of the respective companies, so basic use will be similar, and usernames & passwords can be the same. Advantage to MySpace may be that the new user is an adult who has a child that uses MySpace – this will help the adult enter into the world that the child is walking in.

After making the choice of one of these services, or any for that matter, there is a process where the user can set-up his or her profile. Information provided by the user is wholly upon his/her discretion or preference. One can have the ability of telling his/her name, age, sex, orientation and so on. One only has to offer as little or as much information as he/she feels comfortable with. Somewhere during this process may also be a point where the user is asked about security permissions – whether the user wants certain aspects about his/her profile to be seen, as well as his/her blog. Typically these security settings are set as defaults, and can be over-ridden during the post of a blog entry; however this is not always the case. The user must make sure to read the security settings before committing if he/she has any fear of letting too much about themselves being shown.

Far more advanced security settings can be taken advantage of with other blog hosting services, such as LiveJournal, which shall be mentioned later. For the time being, the simple model of Yahoo!, MSN, and MySpace shall be used.

Writing the Entry

After finding a place to write, the user must then decide upon what to write about. This can be anything imaginable. The only limitations placed on the content of the blog entry would be any by the host (such as possible adult content, threats toward another life, etc.) or the writer. Many write about their day to day life. Others write blogs on a particular subject. At any rate, one may write whatever they would like.

Advanced Blogging

Another common feature among blogs is the ability to embed media – to copy into the post a picture, music, or even a video. With this capability the blog becomes even more of an informal journal or scrapbook. These abilities have also led way to the creation of other blog formats, such as vlogs (video blogs), photo-blogging, and podcasting (term named for “mp3 broadcasts”; where the creator records a talk-show of his/her own with the intent of it being played back on a computer or mp3-player, i.e.: iPod.)

One may go into the arts of vlogging, podcasting, and photo-blogging with little to no expense as well. These methods of blogging, however, are more time-consuming depending upon how in depth the creator of the material wishes to be. These forms thrive primarily using more advanced services that can handle all forms at once; or may require the use of multiple services. Before one dives into these forms, it may be advisable to finely tune the simpler blogging skills, and move up, or graduate from Yahoo, MSN or MySpace. (MySpace may still be used for certain aspects of the advanced, and is very much a good starting point before going farther. MySpace supports a video and photo sharing platform which is easy to
use, and is advancing at a fairly rapid rate. MySpace will also continue to serve as a portal for people to find content elsewhere, seeing as the name is well-known.)

As mentioned previously, one blog (written) host available to the masses is LiveJournal. LiveJournal offers heightened security and customizable levels for viewers. One may set several levels of “friends” or readers within categories, and then give permission to only that level to read a particular post. LiveJournal also offers RSS (Real Simple Syndication) features (as do the aforementioned simpler sites – LiveJournal, however has been, in the author’s experience, more reliable than the other sites) where a person can read all public entries via an RSS reader or their email (web-based or client-side; i.e.: Outlook, Netscape, Thunderbird, etc.) LiveJournal also supports client-side applications that allow for a user to run a program locally in which to write a blog, and then posts to the site later, without the need of operating through an Internet browser. Other additional features are available through LiveJournal with purchase of membership. Similar services include DeadJournal, Greatest Journal, and Blurty.

Post for the heck of it…

So, I haven’t posted much here in a while, so I thought I’d post something… This is it… Nice, huh?

But, seriously folks…

I messed around with my Facebook profile… just for giggles… mainly to give Diana something to do… but, hey, anyone’s welcome to go over there and check it out… I left a nifty little “badge” on the MySpace profile – just click on it…

Other than that, i dunno… Been blogging more on LJ… why not stop by over there, and read up on what i’m doing and thinking… there’s quite a bit going on… feel free to read up on it…

Old Journals…

It’s amazing what you’ll find when you start going through a pile, box, crate, etc. of old papers and documents…
Example… I found a letter that I wrote to Taron, while he was still in the womb… I had done this many times, but have only found evidence of this one…

September 25, 2003
Letter to My Little One,
Mommy’s not feeling well today, and hasn’t since yesterday morning. I am so worried for the both of you. I am so afraid that something is going to happen. Perhaps I should tell you what’s going on, and why I am so worried.
Yesterday morning, mommy awoke with neck and back pain. She had tried to have me help make her neck feel better, earlier, but I was to sleepy to stay awake and help her. The strong woman that she is, made it through the rest of the morning before I awoke. Later she told me with tears in her eyes about how much she hurt. I tried to help, and hope that I have.
Today, Mommy was still in pain, and got a little scare when she found something that might mean trouble. We rushed to the doctor when she got back home from her mommy’s. The nice nurses and doctor told mommy not to worry, and be careful, and to tell them if she needs anything else.
So Mommy is OK now, but she still hurts a little.
I am just scared. I want Mommy and you to both be OK. I don’t want anything bad to happen to either of you. I hope that you come home safely, out here with Mommy and me in four months. I can’t wait to see you. I want to hold you with Mommy, and know that everything will be okay. I love you both so much.
Lovingly Yours,
Daddy

Yeah, Diana was feeling terrible during that period… She had a lot of muscle aches, cramps, and she spotted a bit… we were terrified…
I found another writing of mine, on an old notepad… It dates back to high school…

Yesterday morning, (and I do mean MORNING) something happened that totally blew my mind. Robert, temporarily, went off the deep-end. We (Robert, Chris, Eric C., Jamie S., ByRon, Annie & myself) were at ByRon & Annie’s having our own Independence Day party (which started about 45 minutes before our nation’s b-day was over). For once I saw Robert only on a good buzz from drinking & Chris totally blitzed. Usually its the other way around. It was great, but it soon changed. Robert and I were sitting outside, talking, and the drunks came out. We ignored them and continued talking. Robert had said that he liked buzzing rather than getting drunk, and said that he was an idiot for getting DRUNK like he usually does. He saw how Chris was acting and asked if he acted the same way that Chris was. I told him that that was exactly how he was when he got drunk. He seemed to be a bit embarrassed by this, but the moment passed.
He spoke of the time that he drank and only got a buzz. It was the party that caused him to lose Tracy.
He had given Shandra false directions to his house, so as they wouldn’t show up to take him to the party. He didn’t want to go. They somehow found their way and showed up anyway. When he went out to the truck, he knew something was up. He found that he was the third, and last guy out of six party-goers. He was being set up. Because of this he didn’t get DRUNK because he thought something (like intercourse) might happen if the third girl tried to take advantage of him. The girl did anyway, by giving him a hand-job. Shandra told one of Tracy’s friends, which, in turn, told Tracy. This had been planned. Danielle (the girl who played with Robert) wanted him and Shandra went along with it. Had I have been there, things would’ve went differently. I should’ve been there. I was invited. I didn’t go though, because Robert said that he wasn’t gonna go. I still considered going, but changed my mind because I was told who was gonna be there. I knew that without Robert the group would be an even number of 6, 3 guys & 3 girls, if I went. I should’ve went. Robert & Tracy would still be a couple. I wouldn’t have let this happen.
Anyway, after Robert told me the truth of the matter, the drunks started running around outside. The on who really caused trouble was Chris. We chased him down and got him back inside. However, in our running, the buzz started to increase, and was coming close to drunkenness. Robert started having difficulties in slowing his system back down. Things calmed back down for maybe five minutes, and started all over again. I left Robert outside, telling him to slow his breathing, to to try and cool off. After the second round of chasing drunks had calmed back down, I went back outside to find Robert.
I found Robert, by the shed, beating himself upside his head, with a beer bottle. He was beating himself up because of what he had done to Tracy.
I tried to get him to stop. I tried to talk to him. I was failing. I managed to roll him on his stomach, and grabbed his arms, and hold them behind his back. We laid there in the grass; him still verbally abusing himself, and my arms locking his behind his back. Eric came out looking for us. His buzz was killed when he discovered that I had pinned Robert, in order to keep him from killing himself.  Then everyone else came out. And my memory starts to blur.
Robert gets up, and heads to the house, and we follow, and Annie starts arguing with us. And Eric starts to talk to Robert, to calm him down, and Robert wants a smoke, and I tell Jamie to give him one, and Robert wants a drink, and I pour him one, and I tell Eric to come outside with me, and I tell Eric that he was doing a good job of talking Robert back down, and I collapse on the ground not to far from ByRon, and Robert and Annie come out, and Robert’s been crying – but looks better than he was, and Eric apologizes to Annie for arguing, and I do the same, and we pick up ByRon to bring him back inside, and….
Now I draw a blank. I remember something about ByRon puking up watermelon & gummy bears. I remember all of us trying to get some sleep. Even parts of this morning are fuzzy. When I start remembering things clearly is when I saw Robert fixing refried beans.
Anyway, that’s all I want to say for now. It’s late, and I am tired. I will continue tomorrow.

From what I have heard, there’s a totally different account of what happened at that party Rob went to… Shandra would have to tell you that… Personally, I’d believe Shandra’s version…
Another journal entry follows:

It’s been 2 days since I wrote. The topics have changed a little. But, I’ll go ahead and touch on those topics.
Coffeehouse & Brianne
Brianne Skidmore works there.
I may have to stop by more often.
Josh & Evan
Josh is kinda going with Evan and is madly in love.
Evan’s family is his dream family
Tape from the party
Found & gave the tape to Robert

And another…

Chris still loves Evan. At Coney Island (the sappiest place on earth) he said that he kept “seeing” her. He asked me about Josh & Evan. He comments on Josh & Evan. He left Dark side of the Moon in the car – inside the case were 2 pics of him and Evan @ prom.

Later that day…

Thinking about movie me & Chris discussed making. Should go ahead and get started. ‘Bout a month till school starts again and Chris will be busy with that, and Rob will be headed to college.
Friends headed for college and I’m not. Don’t even have a job yet. Need a job. Need to keep in touch with friends. Maybe when Rob heads for college I’ll start hanging with Chris and his friends. It’ll give me something to do.

Um… I like x’d out the numbers for this post… Amazing… I had digits, and never did a thing with them…
And there’s some more random writing, mainly scribbles and drawings – stuff that text just can’t capture…
Well, I’d better get back to housework…

So, I just ate another Banquet Homestyle Bake… Pizza Pasta… I actually like that one, although I know that I could do better… Hell, anyone can for that matter… take some pasta, through over it some sauce, and toss in some pepperoni… but why stop there? add some mushrooms, peppers, sausage… go nuts…
so, let’s go find that box, and see how much salt i just took in…
well, crap… can’t do that… i made the sucker before leaving this evening… and when i am finished with a box, i tear it up (so it fits in the garbage can, and doesn’t take up that much room)… I also took the trash out before i left… crap…
I’m still hungry…
have this void that needs filled…
hmmm…..
oh well… guess i’ll have a cigarette…

In other news, Jack White and Karen Elson are the proud parents of a baby boy – Henry Lee White… the baby was born yesterday… I only mention this because Diana left a browser open… entertainment news… I don’t know whether she left that open for me to read, or was just absent minded…
Coincidently, I had the privilege to rocking out to Icky Thump on the way home – the song, not the album… I was listening to the radio…
Another interesting thing is that I just left a red-head to head home….
—–
I rode in with Shandra to class this evening, which is, I guess, a habit… I got to ride home with her… a first… was rather fun… learned all sorts of things… like I never knew that the farm across from Cynthiana Hall was named Corinthia… there’s some history there that I don’t know about… I want to research why those farms were named after (distant, but) neighboring cities – Cynthiana and Corinth…
I also learned that her dad was into ghosthunting… Which made me remember a book that I had bought when I had lived with Sam… It was an Idiot’s Guide to Ghosthunting… I accidentally left the book behind when I moved out… I think I had also left behind a few tape recorders, cameras, and a video camera… Wish I hadn’t… I also left behind a few videos that I really wish I hadn’t….

The house is all quiet… just a tinkle every so often from Skinny’s collar… I think he’s prowling because I am awake…

My knees hurt…

I have a lot of housework to catch up on tomorrow…

FYE101 – August 7, 2007

5:34p.m. Sitting in class now. Big Surprise, huh? Well, I dropped off my books, went to a lab to email Diana, and just got back.
After I had gotten out of the van and started toward the school, I looked back at the front of the van, and noticed that somebody ripped the Ford emblem off. So, I emailed Diana, asking her to look around the lot at home for it. Damned neighborhood kids. They have apparently grown tired of throwing mud at my car, and have decided to vandalize the van. I wish I had the money to put an alarm on each car. But what good would that do? It would just be another thing to entice them. They’d be getting a thrill from setting the alarm off. And it doesn’t help any that Diana had yelled at them a short while ago.I’m sure that all that did was make them want to do more damage to the premises. Kind of a challenge. Really. Think about it. By yelling at the kids, and telling them she was going to report them, she was challenging them. I was so pissed off at her for doing that. What’s worse is that she had done so while we were loading up to leave for the evening. I’m surprised that I still had a windshield in my car when we came back that night.
Oh, I’m tired. I need to get just a little more rest in the evenings.
So, I wonder whose group I’m in. I know that someone named Tammy is a member, but I don’t know who Tammy is. I don’t pay attention to things like that.
Oh, yeah, I missed class last week. Diana begged and pleaded for me to stay home because the kids were sick.
Oh, crap. I need to see about being advised. I’ve got the rest of the week, and next week to do it.
Tired.
My knees hurt. My knees have been hurting for the past week. I really don’t know why.
I really cannot see the clock from where I am sitting. I believe that it says something like 5:53p.m. If so, then Laura is early. She just walked in. Looks like we may be watching a video tonight. I dunno. Guess I’ll – wait she’s taking the wrap off of it. So that would be a yes.
Seven, no, wait, eight now.
Now I know who Tammy is. She’s the nurse that works for a urologist.
Ooh, that one girl has a nice tattoo. Sorry, I just noticed it. She’s the one with the cute southern accent.
Handing back an assignment. OOPS! I got 15/20 on it. Whoops. I had skipped over a part. Oh, well. Stuff happens. Hey, but I got a 20/20 on the other one.
Taking roll now. 6:10p.m. Eleven students in attendance.
Took break at 7:19p.m. Went to smoke. Spoke with the tattooed girl. Saw a little more of the tatt. Looks like it covers her left side. Wonder what the whole design looks like. She asked me where I was in the KEY class. Told her that I had no clue. She said she’d hitting around 20 wpm. I said I was around 45-50wpm, which kinda crushed her, until I confessed that I wasn’t doing it properly. I explained that when I type correctly, I’m averaging around 25wpm. She loved hearing that – made her feel so much better.
7:39p.m. We’re still B.S.-ing around. A lot of that goes on. Ah, getting to it now. Question posed, “what did you learn?” in response to the video… Oh, yeah, Gabby is her name – the tattooed girl, that is.
Random writing here – just when there’s non-pertinent discussion.
Everybody bitches about how cold it is here. I love it.
I need to read those textbook handouts, and do the exercises in the Step by Step text.
8:08p.m. – start group activity.
9pm go to lab…

ENG 101 August 6, 2007

Another writing from a notebook, transcribed later…
5:54p.m. I got here late, in comparison to usual. And Laura is early. She just arrived.
Well, so far, including me, six students are here.
I ran to one of the labs a few minutes ago in order to print-off my blogging draft.
Yay! We just got an an in-class assignment from two? three? weeks ago. I got a 10/10 without any corrections on my paper. It was a response to To Bid the World Farewell.
We’re receiving a one sheet handout on APA documentation. I left my manual at home. Left it there for Diana to use for tonight. She has a paper due.
Taking roll now. 6:04p.m.
I had received an email from that Dan Cawley guy of Quick Clicks. Oh, I haven’t mentioned anything on Quick Clicks, or the email I sent. I’ll have to get back to that later.
Laura’s going over the APA cheat-sheet. Mentioning the troubles of citing we-resources. Web-resources can be a total pain. Reason being is that all  the information needed for citation isn’t necessarily there.
6:11p.m. She’s drawing examples on the board now. We’ve taken these notes before. I have no idea what the date was. I failed to date that page. I believe that it was week three. I dunno. I’ll have to research that more to find out. What’s sad is that when I took the notes, I failed to capture everything that was written on the board. I did that primarily because the material was either common knowledge at this point in our educational career; or the material is covered in greater depth in the APA manual.
6:17p.m. Just finished the notes on the board and doing a recap/Q&A. No Q’s though. All A’s. We really don’t ask many questions. Now she’s mentioning the citation websites again. I could only find one – can’t remember the URL. It worked o.k. I don’t know if I’ll use it again.
Gearing up for the co-edit of the papers. OOPS! Two forgot theirs!
(BREAK FOR READING OF ANOTHER STUDENT PAPER)
I just read instructions on how to plumb a house. I can’t say that it was in-depth. It was a good try. Poor guy. I hope he makes it.
6:30p.m. I’m not really participating in the co-edit process. I’m not going to get any decent criticisms anyway.
6:34p.m. Oh, I am bored. Well, one good thing does come from this – I am writing!
Kinda looks like it might rain. Looks overcast.
I can’t believe that I got a spot in the parking lot. It was a miraculous feat! I slid in her at like ten till six, and actually found a spot! Last parking place on the side row. I almost missed it. I quickly backed up and pulled in.
6:39p.m. and we’re readying for break. Final paper will be comparison/contrast. I wonder if I should polish off that paper I wrote last quarter. It was interesting. Well, break. No, wait! Dismissed! Awesome!

Banquet Homestyle Bakes

So, I came home to a quiet apartment… everyone in bed… and I was three little minutes away from dinner – Diana left a plate in the nuker… I’m currently eating it… a “Homestyle Bake” or something like that… you know the type… buy a box off the shelf, put it all in a pan and throw it in the oven… I can’t say it’s good, and I can’t say that it’s bad… I think we’ll try it one more time – only this next time, I’ll fix it and try to change it a bit… needs improvement… needs some sweetness… also could use a bit of heat… maybe red pepper… a change in the cheese couldn’t hurt either… add a different cheese to it… maybe some sharp cheddar, or parmesan… or both…
well, just finished eating it… i honestly believe that i have eaten the same thing out of an MRE… honest… i believe i have… and now that i think about it, it did taste like an MRE… a bit salty, without having that definite salt taste… i wonder what the sodium content on it is… time to go find the box…
Holy-Crap! There’s 1000mg (42% of suggested intake on a 2000 calorie diet) of sodium in one serving. I just took in well over half of the recommend amount of sodium I need in a day! No wonder it tasted salty! Also explains my thirst!
Okay, it was a Banquet Homestyle Bake… Cheesy Ham & Hash Browns… “Cheese Sauce with Savory Ham, Potatoes & Crumb Topping.” and it “Includes Real Cheddar Cheese!”
Hell, I couldn’t tell it was cheddar cheese! I’m disgusted now… Strike that idea of trying it again…. It has way too much salt, and I couldn’t tell that the cheese sauce was a cheddar base… yuck!
Anyway, I’m tired, and am going to bed now…

lj tags

you know… i think i shall start employing the use of tags… might be a good idea… i think i’ll start with the next entry… or maybe the one after that… i dunno… we’ll see i guess…
but i do think it would be beneficial… classify my entries… like random thoughts… rants… crap… stuff… poop… yeah… that’ll work…
but not now… too lazy… need to get back to the housework anyway…
