Microsoft Planning to Buy Open Source Companies?

Microsoft Planning to Buy Open Source Companies?
mjasay writes “At the Web 2.0 Summit, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer admitted that Microsoft ‘will do some buying of companies that are built around open-source products,’ suggesting that to avoid open-source companies would ‘take us out of the acquisition market quite dramatically.’ Ballmer has apparently come a long way since dubbing Linux a ‘cancer.’ The real question, however, is which open-source companies make sense within the Microsoft product portfolio, both from a technology and philosophy perspective. Novell? 37Signals? Jive? SugarCRM? And, equally importantly, which companies could look their communities in the eye after selling to Microsoft?”

QST.org Web Address Now in the Hands of the ARRL

QST.org Web Address Now in the Hands of the ARRL
Long-time ham and ARRL member David Lien, W6OVP, of Battle Ground, Washington, has transferred the Web address www.QST.org to the ARRL. If you head to that URL, you’ll now find yourself in the QST section of the ARRLWeb.

October 19, 2007

blah…. I’m tired…  I’m feverishly rubbing the sleep out of my eyes…
Well, I have no idea yet as to what happened in the area last night, in respect to the weather–I haven’t looked at any news or reports yet. I had stayed up until roughly a quarter past eleven last night, and then resigned myself to sleep, awaiting to be awakened by news of disastrous weather. I had awoke for a moment, at 5:57a.m. this morning, and thought, “Well, it’s over. We made it.” The thought had two emotions–one of happiness, where I was still tired and wanted to sleep, and a feeling of disappointment, where I get a nice cheap thrill from dangerous weather.
I had prepared my bags and equipment last night, before going to bed, in the event that something happened and that I was called upon to work in the office or in the field with the EMA. My bags still sit quietly, on the floor, undisturbed, in front of the desk.
I had moved the scanner upstairs, and took advantage of the weather alert function during the night. It had gone off three times that I recall, last night; once around 10:30p.m., when the tornado watch was extended to cover this region, and twice more, to alert of severe thunderstorms in nearby counties. It’s been silent since.
Now, I sit, trying to get myself to wake up, trying to get moving. I’m so tired.
I wonder how much more Bailey’s blog grew last night, while I slept. It had been quite fun to read–fun watching the comments grow nearly every minute. I think I’ll check his blog first, then go to the NWS, and finally check my inbox to see what news of last night’s events there is available. I also want to see if the threat of not-as-sever-but-still-severe weather is still around, as predicted last night.

The Legend of Sleepy Hollow

I think that I have mentioned Project Gutenberg before… You know, the site with all the free copies of books which are no longer under copyright? Well, here’s a good one, for this time of year:
Washington Irving’s The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.
http://www.gutenberg.org/dirs/etext92/sleep11h.htm
I think I’ll try and read it tomorrow, that is, if tonight’s storms don’t decide to have me doing other things…

Chris Bailey's Weather Blog – Tonight's Sever Weather Threat

Due to the severe weather threat tonight, WKYT’s meteorologist, Chris Bailey, is hosting a “LIVE blog” event.

Chris has been making updates through comments on this post, and is encouraging area citizens, spotters, and weather enthusiasts to chime in, to aid in discussion of the events unfolding tonight.
I’ve been checking in on it every five minutes or so. Been a nice blog entry to watch this evening.

Google to Offer Online Personal Health Records

Google to Offer Online Personal Health Records
hhavensteincw writes “Less than two weeks after Microsoft announced plans to offer personal health records, Google announced today that it plans to offer online personal health records to help patients tote and store their own x-rays and other health data. Google made the announcement Wednesday at the Web 2.0 Summit in San Francisco.”
