working at the office…

I’ve been having a little bit of fun this morning…
After getting woke up, I came down to the office, and fought with Herb’s computer. His NIC went out. Once I got his computer fixed, I got to work on the EMA site. I uploaded a few pictures that were taken, and created a page dedicated to the storm that hit us the other morning.
As of right now, it looks like we were hit by two short lived tornadoes. (unofficial declaration)
Dad was out with the NWS earlier this morning, and is currently out at the PVA getting values of property so that he can send a better damage estimate to Frankfort. Later, he’ll be making rounds with Gayle to visit families again.
Other than that… not too much to report…

storm damage…

Well, if we didn’t have a tornado, we had some strong straight line winds….
We lost power around 1:32 this morning…
(by the way, I’m kinda tired, so the text of this entry will be rather random)
There is damage all over the county…
There was a tractor-trailer overturned in the Wal-Mart parking lot… several homes have been damaged (a lot on KY 32 West)… a local dairy farm has lost all the barns… trees are down everywhere… creeks are flooding… dispatch is without phone service… playground equipment has been destroyed at southside elementary… the post office is missing it’s windows… a piece of the high school’s roof may be missing… modular homes at the local dealership were damaged… the storage units at Southside Plaza are gone (but all the contents seem to still be there)… pumps at Speedway are damaged… and the list goes on…
…and it’s not even daylight…
…and we still have no power…
…and no one will be fully aware of the damage until daylight…
…and whenever the 911 phone system is operational again…

Tips for Staying Healthy During the Flu Season

From the Harrison County Board of Education:
Judy Feeback, district nurse, has a few tips for staying healthy during the flu season:

1.  Wash your hands frequently.

2.  Get plenty of rest.

3.  Use tissue to wipe your nose and then throw the tissue away.

4.  Cover your mouth when you cough / cover your nose when you sneeze.

5.  Eat healthy!

Tammy Klapheke, Food Service Director, has a few tips for eating healthy:

1.  Don’t skip meals.

2.  Eat a lot of fruits and vegetables.  If you don’t have fresh fruits and vegetables, then frozen or canned are good substitutes.

3.  An apple tastes just as sweet as candy, but the natural sugar is better for you than the refined sugar in candy.

4.  Try to make half the breads you eat whole grain.

5.  Eat meat that doesn’t have a lot of fat in it (lean).

6.  Drink milk everyday!

dead computer

It would just figure that my notebook would decide to die. On Thursday afternoon, I left to go pick the kids up from school, and when I returned I found the thing displaying a nice little arrangement of blue and white vertical stripes on the screen. I powered it off, and let it set for 15 seconds, then switched it back on. No display this time. I turned it back off, with the hopes that a few more minutes of rest might be what it needed. Then, while looking down at the casing, just below the keyboard, I noticed a sunken spot. Something had overheated, and melted the case.
I took the thing apart to investigate. No big chore–I had to take it apart a month or so ago to repair the power supply’s jack. Once I disassembled the computer, I found that the graphics processor had overheated.
I pieced it all back together, and turned it back on, in hopes that the time taken to tear it apart had given everything time to cool down. I switched it on, and it was working fine–or so I thought. When I attempted to log into Windows, I found that the keyboard wasn’t responding, nor was the touchpad. With a little bit of frustration, I took the keyboard off, and reseated the ribbon for the touchpad and the keyboard, and tried it again. No luck. I plugged in an mouse and a keyboard, and still no luck.
So, it would seem that when I left, something happened to fry out the keyboard & mouse controllers, and caused the graphics processor to overheat (or vice-versa).
Now I am, once again, without a computer. 🙁
I went to CompUSA and bought an enclosure for my harddirve, and am accessing all of my information on Diana’s notebook. I also found a nice little notebook bundle at a nearby Wal-Mart that I plan to buy in a few days. The bundle is a leftover from this past Thanksgiving’s sales. So, I’ll end up getting a new notebook, and Diana will get a digital camera and photo-printer out of the deal. Not how I wanted to spend our extra tax-money, but, it works.

Towns Issue Bills for Police Services (Jeffrey McMurray – Associated Press)

Erlanger, KY is planning on charging people from out of town for the use of police services.

The idea of billing people for these services came from a need to “obtain some funding to keep providing these services that doesn’t come out of the pockets of the people who own a house in Erlanger.”
In reporting the story, the Associated Press found that out of some 343 traffic accidents during this past November and December, only 49 involved at least one Erlanger citizen, in some way.
Don’t think I’ll be letting Diana drive north…
