Google Announces "Open Phone" Coalition, No gPhone (Updated)

Ponca City, We Love You writes “USA Today has an advance story on Google’s plans to announce a new operating system, geared specifically for cellphones with partners that include Sprint, Motorola, Samsung and Japanese wireless giant NTT DoCoMo. Although details won’t be released until later today the new G-system will be based on Linux overlaid with Java and Google hopes to have a branded device ready for worldwide shipment by spring. Mobile Web browsing is notoriously slow and Google plans to change that by providing easy access to the Internet at PC-type speeds. Google plans to basically give away the software developer tools, used by programmers to write new applications. “If you’re a developer, you’ll be able to develop (applications) for the new Google Phone very quickly,” said Morgan Gillis of the LiMo Foundation. AT&T and Verizon Wireless are noticeably absent from the coalition not wanting to support a device that favors Google over other providers. Sprint, the No. 3 carrier, supports the coalition, but it hasn’t formally agreed to make the Google Phone available to its 54 million subscribers.” Update 1727 GMT by SM: It’s official, Google is releasing the mobile “Android” OS in place of the Google branded mobile phone that many expected.

So, Google is spearheading a movement for an opensource platform for mobile phones to operate on, rather than actually creating a single phone or line of phones. While for some, this may seem disappointing, it opens up a new realm of technologies on the wireless phones of all (who partake) service providers and manufacturers. I’ve embedded the video for the announcement below:

long time no blog

I haven’t done much blogging here in a while. I’ve been fairly busy over the past few weeks. We had student loan overage money come in, and I’ve been busy catching up on a number of our back debts, and deciding what portions of those funds could be spent on the family for winter clothes, and such. And now, one week later, all the money is gone, and we are back on track (well, sorta).
Doesn’t seem like much, but it was enough to take my attention away from my blog.
I’ve missed quite a bit of CoffeeBreak, and have almost lost interest in the show. This morning’s guest is supposed to be speaking about the Veteran’s Day celebration this weekend. That reminds me–I need to do something for mom’s birthday.
As part of Winkle’s toying around with the WCYN website, he has added a “question of the week”–a weekly poll, where listeners/viewers of the site can provide input. This week’s question is:

What is the most important issue that needs to be addressed by the leaders of Cynthiana & Harrison County?

With 7 votes, (as of 7:29am this date) 57% say New Jobs, and 43% say the Recreation Park.
I’m part of the majority–I feel we need to do something about the job market, and bring more business and industry to Cynthiana.
I also hadn’t been able to make a post last week of news in the Democrat, for their site as down, and I’m not wasting 50¢ on a stack of advertisements. I need to check back at their site, and see if it’s back up.
Well, I believe that’s it for now. Think I’ll get back to housework.

Seagate Offers Refunds on 6.2 Million Hard Drives

An anonymous reader writes “Seagate has agreed to settle a lawsuit that alleges that the company mislead customers by selling them hard disk drives with less capacity than the company advertised. The suit states that Seagate’s use of the decimal definition of the storage capacity term “gigabyte” was misleading and inaccurate: whereby 1GB = 1 billion bytes. In actuality, 1GB = 1,073,741,824 bytes — a difference of approximately 7% from Seagate’s figures. Seagate is saying it will offer a cash refund or free backup and recovery software.”

CalTech Creates Electronic Nose

CalTech Creates Electronic Nose
eldavojohn writes “Researchers have created an electronic nose that can detect odor and identify which odors are a concern to it. From the article, ‘The Lewis Group a division of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering at Cal Tech have a working model of an electronic nose. The efforts of Cal Tech scientists has led to an array of simple, readily fabricated chemically sensitive conducted polymer film. An array of broadly-cross reactive sensors respond to a variety of odors. However, the pattern of differential responses across the array produces a unique pattern for each odorant. The electronic nose can identify, classify and quantify when necessary the vapor or odor that poses a concern or threat.'”
