Vista Runs Out of Memory While Copying Files

Vista Runs Out of Memory While Copying Files
ta bu shi da yu writes “It appears that, incredibly, Vista can run out of memory while copying files. ZDNet is reporting that not only does it run out of memory after copying 16,400+ files, but that ‘often there is little indication that file copy operations haven’t completed correctly.’ Apparently a fix was scheduled for SP1 but didn’t make it; there is a hotfix that you must request.”

Swearing at Work is Bleeping Good For You

Swearing at Work is Bleeping Good For You
coondoggie writes “This is the kind of news that your HR folks don’t want to hear, but researchers today said letting workers swear at will in the workplace can benefit employees and employers. The study found regular use of profanity to express and reinforce solidarity among staff, enabling them to express their feelings, such as frustration, and develop social relationships, according to researchers at the University of East Anglia (UES). Researchers said their aim was to challenge leadership styles and suggest ideas for best practice. “Employees use swearing on a continuous basis, but not necessarily in a negative, abusive manner. Swearing was as a social phenomenon to reflect solidarity and enhance group cohesiveness, or as a psychological phenomenon to release stress, ” the study stated.” I’m sure the discussion and tags on this story will be completely G Rated 😉

'Hybrid' HDD Technology To Allow Data Access Without Booting

‘Hybrid’ HDD Technology To Allow Data Access Without Booting
jfruhlinger writes “You’ve got a file on your laptop that you need to access — but you don’t want to wait for your laptop to boot up to get at it. New technology from the company Silicon Storage Technology will make the contents of a hard drive accessible via a computer’s USB port even when the computer is powered down. ‘FlashMate combines hardware, firmware and software in a system application subsystem that manages a notebook computer’s hard drive. It is based on SST’s expertise in NAND flash controllers and memory subsystem design with Insyde Software’s expertise in PC BIOS, system software and power management. FlashMate can work in conjunction with features such as Windows Vista ReadyDrive and serve as nonvolatile cache for the hard disk drive, thus enabling a standard hard disk drive to function as a hybrid drive.'”

Simon Pegg to Play Scotty (2652)

Simon Pegg to Play Scotty
In response to yesterday’s casting news about Chris Pine possibly taking the captain’s chair for the new Star Trek movie, apparently Simon Pegg will be playing the role of Scotty. Simon Pegg is known for his role as Shaun in Shaun of the dead and more recently for his leading role in Hot Fuzz. “Pegg joins Zoe Saldana as Uhura, Anton Yelchin as Chekov, John Cho as Sulu and Zachary Quinto as Spock in the film which reportedly, and logically, ‘chronicles the early days of the Enterprise crew.’ Leonard Nimoy will also put in an appearance, while Eric Bana signed up this week as the movie’s villain, Nero.”

Ignoring Burning Ban Causes Big Problem

Ignoring Burning Ban Causes Big Problem
We’re in the midst of a severe drought and people across the state have been ordered not to burn anything outside. That ban hasn’t stopped some people from burning brush in their own back yards and that can lead to a dangerous situation.
