A large upper-level disturbance and associated cold front will approach the Ohio Valley on Saturday. A warm and moist airmass will reside ahead of this system, which will set the stage for thunderstorm development Saturday afternoon through the first part of the overnight hours. Damaging winds will be the main severe threat but large hail, heavy rain, and even an isolated tornado or two will be possible, especially Saturday evening across southern Indiana and north-central Kentucky. It is possible that thunderstorms on Saturday morning may hinder the afternoon/evening instability, thus lowering the severe threat. Therefore, please stay tuned to the latest forecasts as details about the threat become more apparent.

Below are severe outlooks from the Storm Prediction Center. The yellow color in the first graphic depicts a slight risk of severe weather. The second graphic shows the probability of severe weather within 25 miles of a point.

Severe Threat Diminishing but Storms Still Expected

wxstory20(2)

A line of showers and storms will move through the Ohio Valley ahead of strong cold front tonight. While the severe threat with these storms is diminishing, a few strong storms will still be possible as powerful low and mid level winds will overspread the area. Overall, most places can expect between 0.75″ and 1.5″ of rainfall through the event.

Line of Strong to Severe Storms Moving Through Tonight

A vigorous cold front will move through the region tonight.  Ahead of that front, expect gusty winds from the south today.  Wind gusts up to 40 mph are expected this afternoon, thus a Wind Advisory is in effect across the region.  Tonight, a line of storms is expected to develop west of the area, just ahead of the cold front, and head east.  The best estimate for timing this storm through our area is listed in the image below.

04182013

The Storm Prediction Center in Norman, OK has forecast a moderate risk of severe weather as this line moves through the region tonight.  The best chance for damaging winds, tornadoes, and large hail looks to be along and west of the I-65 corridor.  However, severe weather is still possible east of that corridor late tonight.

day1otlk_1200

Threat for Tornadoes

(hatched area represents a greater than 10% chance for significant tornadoes)

Damaging Wind Threat (>58 mph)

(hatched area represents a greater than 10% chance for wind gusts greater than 75 mph)

Large Hail Threat (>1″ in diameter)

Stay tuned for updates throughout the day, and make sure you have a means to be awakened should severe weather threaten while you are asleep.

AROUND SUNSET...BUT SHOULD PICK UP AGAIN JUST AHEAD OF A LINE OF
STORMS EXPECTED TO MOVE THROUGH THE REGION LATER TONIGHT.

A WIND ADVISORY MEANS THAT SUSTAINED WINDS OF 30 TO 39 MPH OR
WIND GUSTS FROM 40 TO 57 MPH ARE EXPECTED. WINDS THIS STRONG CAN
